This momentum culminated in the startup raising over $20 million in funding from venture capital firm Sequoia Capital, a week after announcing a $10 million seed investment from Benchmark.

LangChain’s power lies in its versatility and integrations. As of March 2023, LangChain boasts integrations with a range of systems, from major cloud storage platforms like Amazon, Google, and Microsoft Azure, to API wrappers that provide the latest news, weather forecasts or film information. It supports multiple web scraping subsystems to generate in-context learning prompts, find “to-do” tasks in code and sum them up. LangChain also integrates with Google Drive documents, spreadsheets and presentations so that an application can extract information, as well as create or summarize documents. Additionally, LangChain has a built-in search functionality for Google Search and Microsoft Bing. It supports OpenAI, Anthropic and Hugging Face language models, and can search and summarize iFixit repair guides and wikis.

How LangChain works

1. Be data-aware: By connecting a language model to other sources of data, they enrich the context and increase the utility of the model

2. Be agentic: They enable a language model to interact with its environment, expanding the range of tasks it can automate and the complexity of problems it can solve

LangChain offers two advantages for engineers who want to facilitate the development of advanced apps:

Components: In LangChain, the components you need to work with language models come with modular abstractions. The framework also provides a range of implementations for these abstractions. The components are meant to be easy to use for everyone, even if you’re not going to use other parts of the framework.

Use case-specific chains: You can interpret chains as a process of putting components together so that you can create a particular use case in an optimal way. Chains serve as a higher-level interface which developers use to quickly start working on a specific use case. It’s worth noting that chains are customizable, enabling developers to tailor the framework to their specific needs and objectives.
