Project overview

The project focused on analyzing two construction estimating applications and preparing a roadmap for transferring selected capabilities from a legacy .NET solution to a cloud platform built with PHP and Angular. Software Mind Code, our internal orchestration engine, enabled repository level analysis of both applications, so the team could trace how features were implemented, compare the codebases and translate the findings into technically grounded user stories and delivery estimates. Software Mind Blueprint, our AI-driven assessment, provided a structured view of database schemas, relationships and data dependencies, which informed the phased customer data migration approach. Together with the client-provided feature list and workflow walkthroughs, this analysis supported a three-phase implementation roadmap.

Client background

Our client provides specialist business management and ERP software for construction, contracting and housebuilding companies. Its product portfolio supports estimations, commercial management, project delivery and financial control. The acquisition of a cloud-based estimating and cost management platform created an opportunity to consolidate product capabilities and plan the next generation of its construction software.

Goals

The goal was to create a clear, evidence-based plan for transferring selected capabilities from a legacy construction estimating application to a modern cloud platform. This required comparing the functionality, source code and database structures of both systems, identifying capability gaps and understanding how customers used the existing product. The team also needed to divide the transformation into three manageable phases, account for customer data migration between them and translate the findings into user stories and delivery estimates.

Results

A three-phase modernization roadmap

The discovery produced a structured plan for transferring selected legacy capabilities to the target platform, including the sequence of work and planned customer data migrations between phases.

Connected code and data analysis

Software Mind Code supported repository analysis and the creation of technically grounded user stories, while Software Mind Blueprint revealed database relationships and migration dependencies. Combining these views helped the team prepare a coherent three-phase delivery plan.

Requirements grounded in repository analysis

Software Mind Code helped the team connect business requirements with their implementation in both codebases. The resulting user stories included stronger technical context for backlog planning, estimation and future development.

Estimates based on system evidence

The team prepared delivery estimates using client workshops, functional gap analysis and direct examination of both applications' source code and database structures.

A clear view of functional gaps

The analysis established which capabilities were already supported by the target platform, which required enhancement and which needed to be developed.

Lower uncertainty before implementation

The discovery identified architectural, functional and data dependencies before implementation and clarified the planned transformation's scope, effort and risks.
